Description: |
Based on the NASW Code of Ethics, this course provides readers with essential information regarding the ethical standards for practice and professional conduct with clients. The reader will explore key ethical responsibilities social workers have to clients based on Section 1 of the Code of Ethics before reading a brief vignette describing a practice situation. The reader will then be asked to choose the better of two proposed actions. This activity gives the reader the opportunity to practice interpreting and applying specific standards to common practice situations.
Ethical questions are rarely simple and straight forward and seasoned professionals often disagree with the stated answer. Given that this course is a brief overview rather than a more lengthy discussion, the vignettes chosen are simpler than many faced in clinical settings. The authors are well aware that interpreting and applying ethical standards is rarely, if ever, simple or clear-cut. The vignettes provided were chosen to illustrate key educational points. The selected better answers are not meant to represent a full and/or complete analysis.
