Pre-license Requirement: This two-part course, offering 8 hours, is designed to meet the California Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS) requirement for pre-license content in Spousal/Partner Abuse or Intimate Partner Violence. The specific requirement is defined by the year the applicant entered a degree program. License Renewal: This two-part course, offering 8 CEUs, is designed to meet the 2004 California Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS) 7-hour license renewal requirement for training in Spousal/Partner Abuse or Intimate Partner Violence.
Specific Requirements: To view the specific requirements for licensure, please visit the BBS Web site at www.bbs.ca.gov and review continuing education requirements for LCSWs and MFTs.
Module 1: This first module will focus on the prevalence of intimate partner violence, the various types of IPV, typical presentations of IPV in clinical settings, screening tools, treatment issues, the long-term physical and psychological effects of IPV, and identification and use of community resources.
Module 2: This second module will address special issues including, but not limited to, teen-dating violence, partner violence in gay and lesbian relationships, child witnesses to domestic violence, issues related to immigrants, and the identification and treatment of batterers.

Any social workers who wishes to update or expand his/her skills in working with victims of violence will benefit by taking this course.

Objectives: |
After completing this first module (of a two-part course), the registrant will:
- Be aware of the prevalence of intimate partner violence (IPV).
- Be aware of the various types of IPV.
- Be able to define IPV and the cycle of violence.
- Be able to identify clinical signs and symptoms that may indicate abuse.
- Be able to recognize client-centered, clinician-centered, and societal barriers to the identification of abuse.
- Be familiar with interview techniques and screening tools designed to elicit an abuse history.
- Be familiar with community resources for victims of IPV and their children.
- Be aware of legal mandates and state mandatory reporting requirements.
