Course Description: This course provides information and analyses of general principles of professional liability and risk management, issues related to standard of care, confidentiality and/or privileged communication, scope of practice, and the management of ethical dilemmas related to client care. It also provides legal and ethical insights regarding the much-neglected concerns specific to the areas of couple, family, and group therapy.

This course strives to highlight the complexity of legal and ethical dilemmas within the context of case vignettes. Through the analysis of vignettes designed to illustrate the complexity and many nuances of legal and ethical issues in clinical practice, the reader will learn how best to apply legal and ethical principles in daily practice. It is hoped that reader will gain an appreciation that handling such issues often involves balancing multiple and competing ethical concerns, legal mandates, and value orientations.

Licensing Requirement: This content meets the California licensing requirement that Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSWs) complete six continuing education units in law and ethics every renewal beginning with the first renewal, falling on or after January 1, 2004. Target Audience: This course was developed for social workers and other clinicians seeking a more sophisticated and contextual understanding of law and ethics involved in daily clinical practice.
