Course Description: Pre-license Requirement: This two-part course, offering 8 hours, is designed to meet the California Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS) requirement for pre-license content in Spousal/Partner Abuse or Intimate Partner Violence. The specific requirement is defined by the year the applicant entered a degree program.

License Renewal: This two-part course, offering 8 CEUs, is designed to meet the 2004 California Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS) 7-hour license renewal requirement for training in Spousal/Partner Abuse or Intimate Partner Violence.

Specific Requirements: To view the specific requirements for licensure, please visit the BBS Web site at www.bbs.ca.gov and review continuing education requirements for LCSWs and MFTs.

Module 1: This first module will focus on the prevalence of intimate partner violence, the various types of IPV, typical presentations of IPV in clinical settings, screening tools, treatment issues, the long-term physical and psychological effects of IPV, and identification and use of community resources.

Module 2: This second module will address special issues including, but not limited to, teen-dating violence, partner violence in gay and lesbian relationships, child witnesses to domestic violence, issues related to immigrants, and the identification and treatment of batterers.

 

Target Audience: Any social worker or practictioner who wishes to enhance their knowledege and skill in working with victims of violence.

 

Learning Objectives: After completing this second module, the registrant will:
  1. Recognize risk factors and characteristics of batterers.


  2. Be familiar with approaches to batterers’ treatment.


  3. Identify clinical signs and symptoms that indicate childhood exposure to intimate partner violence.


  4. Be familiar with the long-term physiological and psychological sequelae of children exposed to violence.


  5. Understand the dynamics and risks associated with teen-dating violence.


  6. Recognize the impact that diversity may have on exposure to violence, treatment issues, and resource utilization.


  7. Be aware of the special risks and service needs of individuals in diverse communities exposed to violence.
