Description: |
Both the first and second modules of this course were designed to provide the foundation for a better understanding and application of the principles and practices involved with clinical supervision. The first module reviews models and approaches to supervision while providing the theoretical framework upon which the approaches rest. The second module discusses critical issues in supervision, such as suicide, alcohol and drug use, multicultural and gender issues, working with special populations, sexual harassment, dual relationships, and the development of self-efficacy. In addition to providing facts, important information, and theories to social workers, this module also contains vignettes that assist in the application of the material being studied.
Clinical Supervision Requirements
Please visit the Board’s website at www.bbs.ca.gov for more information regarding California’s clinical supervision requirements for ASWs and IMFs.
Two Modules:
This course is broken into two modules, which may be taken together or separately. If registrants complete both modules, they will earn a total of 6-CEUs.
Module 1: Models of Clinical Supervision 3.0 CEUs
Module 2: Critical Issues in Clinical Supervision 3.0 CEUs

| Target Audience: |
- Supervising IMFs: This module was designed to meet the California Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS) requirement for Supervising Marriage Family Therapist Interns (IMFs). The BBS requires those supervising IMFs to obtain 6 hours in clinical supervision before commencing supervision and every renewal thereafter.
- Supervising ASWs: This module also addresses supervising an Associate Clinical Social Worker (ASW). However, for those supervising Associate Clinical Social Workers (ASWs), the BBS requires the supervisor to take a one-time 15-hour class. The NASW-CA Chapter offers this 15 hour, two-day course through its CE Fairs and Annual Conference.
- Others: Social workers, counselors, or therapists may choose to take Module 1 and/or Module 2 to refresh or increase their knowledge of clinical supervision principles, roles, approaches, and models.
