Course Description: This second of two modules focuses on intervention and treatment in child abuse related cases. The content explores how mental health professionals can intervene and treat cases in which abuse or neglect was the presenting problem, as well as cases where child maltreatment was not the presenting problem. Major consideration is given to the treatment of child victims and their parents in both physical and sexual maltreatment cases.

 

Target Audience:

California Required Pre-Licensure Coursework

The two child abuse modules meet the California pre-license requirement for seven (7) hours of child abuse assessment and reporting coursework for associate social workers (ASWs), marriage family interns (IMFs), and psychological assistants, as outlined by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS). Learning Objectives:

At the end of this module, the reader will be able to:

  1. Better understand the need for multidisciplinary, interagency intervention in child maltreatment cases.

  2. Identify several core issues in the treatment of children who have been abused and/or neglected.

  3. Identify several core issues in the treatment of parents who have abuse and/or neglected their children.

  4. Identify at least one major treatment program for families experiencing physical child abuse and/or neglect.

  5. Identify at least one major treatment program for families experiencing sexual abuse.

  6. Identify at least one treatment resource useful in treating adults who were molested as children.

  7. Identify at least one treatment resource useful in treating male victims of same-sex abuse.

  8. Identify at least one treatment resource useful in treating intra-familial child sexual abuse offenders.

  9. Identify at least one national multidisciplinary organization devoted to issues related to child abuse and neglect.
