Description: |
This course is the first of three modules addressing alcoholism and other chemical dependency as required by the California State Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS), the licensing and regulatory body for LCSWs and MFTs. The content of Module 1 discusses important topics including commonly used drugs and their effects, types of alcoholism, diagnosis and assessment of alcohol and substance dependency, the American Society for Addiction Medicine (ASAM) Criteria, family issues related to addiction, and future treatment trends. In each major section of the content, a case study is presented that assists the readers in applying the information presented to their daily practice.
Due to the prevalence and far reaching consequences of the problem on the individual, the immediate family, and community (including employers); it is critical for anyone engaged in clinical social work to have a good working knowledge and understanding of all of the issues involved with alcoholism and chemical dependency. A good clinician needs to know how to take a thorough drug and alcohol history, how to conduct a bio-psychosocial assessment, how to determine the stage of the problem, and how to make an appropriate referral for treatment if the problem is outside of their scope of practice.
