Description: |
The content for this course is a book written and published by the author. The book can be purchased at http://fgrosso.com/publications-2.aspx. See course outline for a list of topics.
This course addresses the legal, ethical, and clinical responsibilities of California mental health clinicians when facing and managing high-risk crisis issues. California law and professional ethical standards are presented, to provide clinicians with a sound foundation necessary to address these potentially devastating and, at times, lethal clinical situations. When clinicians fail to protect themselves legally, they can face damaging malpractice and/or administrative actions. The most devastating of these situations can occur when the clinician faces an accusation of contributing to the wrongful death of the client and/or others.
This course also addresses the inherent nature of high-risk issues, which is that they are impossible to predict. This course prepares clinicians for these contingencies with a systematic approach to understanding the required legal and ethical therapeutic duties, the clinical management of these issues in a reasonable and prudent fashion, and the appropriate documentation needed to protect the client, clinician, and therapeutic relationship. The book incorporates over 20 case vignettes to assist the reader in better understanding the application of the information and guidelines provided.
