Description: |
This course is based on the New Zealand film "Once were Warriors." It is a disturbing and brutal drama based on the bestselling novel by Alan Duff about a family in a state of perpetual crisis. With harsh yet realistic ferocity, it explores domestic violence, alienation, poverty, cultural oppression, self-medication and the brutal yet seductive spiral of violence. Social workers, clinicians and mental health providers often hear terrifying stories of abused women and their children who have suffered in the background. This extremely realistic drama about domestic violence will provide registrants with a close-up view of the day-to-day life, struggles and survival strategies of the film’s family members. The cast includes Jake, who is alienated, unemployed, drowning his miseries with his "mates" in the bar; Beth, the physically and sexually abused mother of five who struggles to hold her family together, yet fails to protect them from multiple forms of abuse; and three adolescent children who embark on their normal emancipation process with tragic results.
Warning: This film is painful to watch. The scenes of physical and sexual violence are powerful and gut wrenching.
