Course Description:

Iris is a film about British novelist and philosopher, Iris Murdoch, and is based on two books written by her husband, John Bagley, a professor of English literature. The movie alternates between scenes of the young couple’s life and of their later life struggles with Iris’s worsening Alzheimer’s Disease (AD). It contrasts the once young, full-of-life Iris with the aging woman whose mind continues to deteriorate as her husband watches helplessly. Iris’s descent into Alzheimer’s Disease (AD), the progression of the disease, and the effects on her husband (and primary caregiver) are well-described in this film.

The four major themes that will be explored prior to watching the film are: (1) Types of Dementia and Memory Disorders, (2) Alzheimer’s Disease; (3) Caregiver Stress and (4) End-of-Life Choices.
