Course Description:

This course is part of a two-part series on sexual deviant behaviors and sex offenders. The first module focused on giving the reader a better understanding of deviant sexual behaviors and, more specifically, theories about sex offenders along with what little is known about sex offender recidivism.

This second module will explore how to manage and treat known sex offenders living in the community. Topics will include: (a) the ethical and civil rights issues; (b) critical components of effective community management; (c) critical components of treatment; and (d) community reintegration.

As mentioned in the first module, the field of sex offender research is young, and professionals who work with this population can barely keep up with the published material. These two modules are designed to be an overview for mental health professionals, professional social workers, and others who are looking to increase their understanding of sexual deviant behaviors and to be a more effective member of the treatment team. As with Part I, this content provides current research and ethical issues facing those who work with sex offenders.

Target Audience: This course is designed to provide professional social workers and mental health professionals with empirical research on the many facets of community management and treatment of sex offenders, as well as enable professionals to engage in critical thinking about the emerging ethical issues.
