Description: |
This course is based on a Sundance award winning documentary film, Southern Comfort, which introduces the viewer to Robert Eads, a 52-year-old female-to-male transgender person, who lives in rural Georgia. Robert began his transitioning during his 40’s after being married (as a woman) and having two sons. In 1996, Robert experienced severe abdominal pain and vaginal bleeding that was diagnosed as ovarian cancer. He subsequently was denied medical treatment by multiple physicians because of his transgender status.
The film follows Robert during the last year of his life, his relationship with Lola, a male-to-female transgender person. It also offers a glimpse into the lives of several other transgender individuals, whom Robert refers to as "his family." This film provides insight into the social, psychological, and health issues and disparities that face transgender individuals as they transition and begin to live their lives anew. Robert and his chosen family are followed as they participate in the annual "Southern Comfort" transgender conference in Atlanta.
