Description: |
For the past 50 years, social workers have been in the forefront of efforts to develop effective community-based care for people with serious mental illnesses. This course describes the history, approaches, concepts, and experience in defining and implementing community-based comprehensive service models. As service systems have evolved, the focus of this work has shifted from maintaining psychological stability and increased community tenure for a previously institutionalized population to supporting recovery and community integration for people with psychiatric disabilities. In addition, the research findings on what works for seriously mentally ill individuals has led to an emphasis on implementing evidence-based practices within community-based programs and systems of care. Specifically the course provides a brief history of treatment approaches for people with severe and persistent mental illnesses and describes the premises and principles to be incorporated into all service approaches for these clients.
