Course Description:

In recent years, mental health practitioners have slowly begun to re-frame the medical model traditionally used to understand mental illness and functioning. Historically, mental illness has been defined as chronic, incurable, manageable, and hopeless. Deterioration and ultimate debilitating impairment were thought of as inevitable.

This course provides a foundational understanding of the Recovery Model as applied to mental health. The values and beliefs that underlie the Recovery Model are presented, as are guiding principles and strategy recommendations. Participants will be introduced to the importance of empowering consumers to act on their own behalf in pursuit of their recovery.

This course is for social workers and paraprofessionals interested in learning about the foundation of the Recovery Model as it applies to mental health.
