The course content was developed around the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) publication “A Practitioner’s Resource Guide: Helping Families to Support Their LGBT Children,” written by Caitlin Ryan, PhD, ACSW. This 18-page publication provides practice guidelines for engaging diverse families to decrease their LGBTQ+ children’s risk for suicide, homelessness, HIV, and other negative outcomes and to promote well-being, based on research and core principles from the San Francisco State University Family Acceptance Project.® The goal of this guide is to help practitioners who work in a wide range of settings to understand the critical role of family acceptance and rejection in contributing to the health and well-being of adolescents who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender. To complete the course, readers access online content, view several short-web-based video clips, and read the SAMHSA publication before taking the online posttest.
This course was written for social workers, behavioral health practitioners, and other service providers who are interested in research and resources related to helping families to support their LGBTQ+ children and adolescents.
